Citizen Science Manager
Location: Dallas, Texas
Division/Department: Trinity River Audubon Center
 
Purpose & Summary of the position

To develop, implement, and manage successful citizen science programs at the Trinity River Audubon Center.

To support The National Audubon Society's mission - to conserve and restore natural ecosystems, focusing on birds, other wildlife, and their habitats for the benefit of humanity and the Earth's biological diversity.

 
Essential Functions
  • Designs, administers, and evaluates a variety of citizen science initiatives.
  • Promotes and hosts workshops to enable participation in citizen science initiatives.
  • Designs and administers internship programs.
  • Acts as liaison to higher education institutions and citizen science program developers.
  • Designs, teaches, and evaluates a variety of classes in areas such as wildlife ecology, ecosystems, animal characteristics, habitats, nature appreciation, geology, paleontology, entomology, biodiversity, and conservation.
  • Quantifies and catalogues Trinity River Audubon Center site species.
  • Provides high-quality customer service. Greets guests, answers questions, monitors crowds, and ensures safety.
  • Assists with program promotion and marketing to inform the community of available resources and maximize participation.
  • Performs administrative duties including compiling reports, distributing promotional materials, scheduling and evaluating programs.
  • Assists with volunteer staff training.
 
Relationships

Internal:  Reports to the Director of Education.  Works closely with operations, volunteer, and conservation staff.  Collaborates with Audubon staff statewide.
External:  Cultivates strong working relationships with local organizations, agencies, schools, local Audubon chapters, educators, scientists and potential supporters.

 
Equipment: (e.g., computer, typewriter, calculator, copy machines, telephone, etc.)

Must be proficient with computer, Microsoft Office Suite, statistical analysis software, and standard office equipment.

 
Qualifications: (e.g., education, training, experience, licenses and skills)
  • MS degree in education, science, or related field. (PhD desired). 
  • Proficiency with data gathering tools, data analysis and reporting.
  • Proficiency with experimental design and protocols.
  • Minimum of five years experience in scientific research, education and/or field-based conservation work.
  • Must demonstrate excellent leadership and interpersonal skills.
  • Must demonstrate excellent organizational skill and be able to multi-task.
  • Must demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Must thrive in a team environment and have a strong demonstrated interest in nature, animals, and science. 
  • Previous experience teaching people of different ages and backgrounds is essential.
  • Experience working in a nature center, zoo, aquarium, museum, or park a plus.
  • Spanish language proficiency preferred.
  • Must be available to work weekends, weekdays, holidays, and evenings as needed.
 
Physical Requirements: (e.g., lifting, reaching, climb, push/pull, etc.)

The ability to lift, push/pull, carry, and otherwise move up to 50lbs.  Some lifting of boxes and moving equipment (50lbs. max) and other light physical duties.  Stamina required for frequent travel, including considerable walking and standing for events and presentations.
