Audubon Leaders: Stephen W. Kress,
Vice President,
Bird Conservation Director, Seabird Restoration Program

Stephen W. Kress is Vice President for Bird Conservation for the National Audubon Society. He is an expert in seabird conservation and management, colony formation in seabirds and seabird foraging ecology. His special interests also include habitat management for land birds, including methods for attracting songbirds to properties large and small.

Stephen directs the Audubon Seabird Restoration Program where he develops techniques for managing colonial nesting seabirds. In this role, he has developed innovative techniques for restoring puffins and other rare and endangered seabirds to islands on the Maine coast and many other locations worldwide.

Stephen is a Laboratory Associate at the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology where for the past three decades he has developed and taught his well-known Spring Field Ornithology course. He also teaches field ornithology classes at the Hog Island Audubon Center in Maine.

A respected ornithologist, Stephen has served on a multitude of committees and advisory groups and has been selected for numerous conservation awards, fellowships and scholarships.

He received his undergraduate and Master's degrees in Wildlife Management from Ohio State University and his Ph.D. in Environmental Education from Cornell University.

Stephen lives with his wife Elissa and daughter Liliana on a 33-acre rural property at the edge of Ithaca, NY.
