About the Bird: The Fish Crow is an opportunist that once only inhabited the Atlantic and Gulf Coast plains, but now can be found further inland, all the way up to the Ohio River Valley. Climate change, however, will reshape the bird’s fortunes, making 98 percent of its current summer breeding range unsuitable at the current pace of warming. Audubon’s models show that if it perseveres it will likely do so only in small pockets of the Northeast United States and Canada.
About the Artist: Hitnes hails from Rome and his work spans genres, including graffiti, illustration, and fine art. Since 2012 he has taught screen-printing courses at Rome’s European Institute of Design, as well as workshops in muralism, and exhibited internationally. His piece for the Audubon Mural Project capped a three-month odyssey called “The Image Hunter,” for which he retraced John James Audubon’s steps around America while painting 15 murals. “I spotted the Fish Crow in Florida early this summer,” he says, “and thought it would be fitting on a mural so close to John James Audubon’s grave.”
