About the Bird: The Violet-green Swallow takes advantage of a wide range of nesting habitats and sites—including birdhouses—throughout the West, from Alaska to Mexico. It can often be seen catching insects on the wing. With 3 degrees Celsius of warming it is poised to lose 42 percent of that; with 1.5 degrees, only 28 percent.
About the Artist: His roots in the graffiti world make spray paint Christian Penn’s medium of choice. Penn is the executive director of Projectivity Group, a nonprofit based in Staten Island that focuses on arts and youth, and he also works with students in schools and through youth agencies. “I always prefer painting colorful tropical birds,” he says of his avian subject. “The Violet-green Swallow stood out with its deep hues that blend really nicely. I'm partial to its palette of blues, greens, and purples.”
