Diego Herrera is the Walker Design Fellow at the National Audubon Society. Diego is currently majoring in graphic design at The Cooper Union in New York. Their graphic design work uses expressive typography to create graphic systems that maximize viewer engagement. In 2019, Diego worked with a team of artists, architects, and engineers on a project titled “Hello World” which explores the relationship between emerging technology and climate change. Diego’s role in the project was to create a visual identity system that allows for reproducibility, while remaining ecologically conscious. As a member of a generation who inherited an ecologically damaged planet, they were focused on finding a sustainable solution to reproducing the printed magazine. One of these solutions was printing on recycled paper, using solvent-free toner. Diego believes that learning by viewing graphics changes the way that we interact with the world and deepens our understanding of not only information, but ourselves.
