During the 116th CBC United States counts reported 646 species, 53 infraspecific forms and seven Count Week species, plus 36 exotics. The Fieldfare reported on the Missoula, MT, CBC was new to U.S. CBCs.
California beat Florida by five for the most species with the highest counts of individuals. California’s tally of high counts for 118 species was its lowest in 12 years, and Florida’s 113 was its most ever. Texas placed 3rd with 98th species, Arizona 4th with 87, Hawai’i 54, Alaska 30, Massachusetts 24, Louisiana 22, Washington 19, Oregon 14 and Virginia 12.
Matagorda County – Mad Island Marsh, TX, again led the Nation with the highest tallies of individual species at 20. Kendall Area, FL, was 2nd with 17 species, and Atascosa Highlands, AZ, 3rd with 16 species and two forms. Tucson Valley, AZ, had 14 species and one form, Midway Atoll, HI, 11 species, HI, Hawai’i: Volcano 10 species and one form, HI, Oahu: Waipi’o nine species, San Diego, CA, eight species and one form, Patagonia, AZ, and Point Reyes Peninsula, CA, eight species. All other CBCs had seven or fewer highest tallies of a species.
All-time high counts were made for 40 species/forms this season. Seven of these were at least 30 years old. Harlingen, TX, report of 10 Hooded Orioles broke a 57-year-old record which was produced in Orange County, CA, during a time much different than today. A record of more national significance was the report of 17 California Condors, at Pinacles N. M., CA, which surpassed the 13 reported at the Sespe Wildlife Area during the 69th CBC. Atascosa Highlands report of 103 Gray Flycatchers greatly exceeded the 68 reported by Nogales during 1977. The Thick-billed Vireo reported by Kendall Area, FL, tied a Coot Bay – Everglades N.P. record from the 81st CBC. Galveston, TX, took advantage of large numbers of American Avocets which roost on Bolivar Flats by reporting 9742 which exceeded the 8509 reported by San Jose, CA, during the 80th CBC. Merced N.W.R. pushed the record number of Ross’s Goose to 70,583 which broke a 33 year record of 65,000 reported in Peace Valley, CA.
The highest tally for 699 species and infraspecific forms was one individual for 48 species (7%), and 10 or fewer for 137 (20%). This proportion of species with 10 or fewer individuals is consistent with past years.
Only counts for naturally occurring species, infraspecific forms, and exotics that do not have editorial comments questioning the validity of the results were accepted for this reports. High counts for exotics without known established populations were displayed, but were not added to results for the CBC or state. If I made a mistake, please let me know and I will include corrections next year at the end of the column.
