United States Christmas Bird Counts reported 666 species, 44 infraspecific forms, nine count week species, and 44 exotics. The Nazca Booby which is a recent split from the Masked Booby was reported on CA, San Diego, and is new to U.S. CBCs. The Citrine Wagtail found at CA, Sacramento, would have been new as well if it occurred on Count Day.
California led all states with 138 species, 17 forms, and 13 exotics. Texas came in 2nd with 94 species, three forms, and three exotics. Florida placed 3rd with 86 species, one form, and 23 exotics, and was followed by Hawai’i with 74 species, one form and two exotics, Arizona with 64 species, five forms and one exotic, Alaska with 29 species, Massachusetts with 20 species and one form, Louisiana with 18 species, two forms and one exotic, Oregon with 15 species, and Washington with 13 species. All other CBCs had less than 12 high counts.
Atascosa Highlands, AZ, led the nation with 18 species. San Diego, CA, was 2nd with 16 species and one infraspecific form, and Kendall Area, FL, was 3rd with 15 species and three exotics. They were followed by Midway Atoll, HI, with 15 species, Harlingen, TX, with 14 species, Oakland, CA, with 11 species and three forms, Tucson Valley, AZ, with 10 species and two forms, Gainesville, FL, and Honolulu, HI, with 10 species, Matagorda County-Mad Island Marsh and Weslaco, TX, with nine species, Gila River and Ramsey Canyon, AZ, and Guadalupe River-McFaddin Family Ranches, TX, with eight species, Hayward-Fremont, CA, Waipi’o, HI, and Concord, MA, with seven species, Coot Bay, FL, with six species and two forms, Kapa’a, HI, with six species and one form, Portal, AZ, and Monterey Peninsula, CA, with six species. All other CBCs had five or fewer high counts.
All-time high counts were made for 44 species/forms this season. Twenty-one of these exceeded records that were made during the last four seasons. It is rare to break records that were made over 30 years ago. With increasing numbers of birders and improved technologies along with bumper breeding seasons and favorable weather patterns this occasionally happens. This occurred twice this season. The 138 Black-and-white Warblers reported by FL, Gainesville, was a significant increase over the long-standing tally of 110 reported by FL, Coot Bay-Everglades N.P., during the 81st CBC. The 3012 Western Bluebirds reported by AZ, Sedona, is hard to comprehend. The previous record of 1505 found at AZ, Grand Canyon, (70th season) stood for 48 years. The compiler commented “they were everywhere”.
The most frequent highest tally for the 666 species was one individual. This occurred for 9% of the reports which is a 25% higher rate of “1” than last season. The total species jumped up 4% from the 117th season.
