December 14, 2022 to January 5, 2023

United States Christmas Bird Counts (CBC) reported 671 species, 70 infraspecific forms (forms), and 35 exotic species (ex).  The Southern Lapwing at Oscoda, MI, and the Wood Sandpiper at San Jacinto Lake, CA, were new species.  Additional species during Count Week (cw) were – Gunnison Sage-Grouse (CO, Gunnison), White-tailed Ptarmigan (CO, Aspen), Fork-tailed Storm-Petrel (AK, Sitka), Masked Booby and Slaty-backed Gull (HI, Midway Atoll), Black Tern (HI, North Kona), Red-faced Warbler nd (AZ, Ramsey Canyon), and Scarlet Tanager (IA, Ames) which had been reported in previous years.

California led all states with high tallies of 131 species, 16 forms, and 15 ex.   Florida placed 2nd for the 4th time in five years with high counts of 91 species, 6 forms and 17 ex.   Texas was 3rd with high counts for 84 species, 3 forms and 3 ex.  These were followed by Arizona with high tallies for 75 species, 4 forms and 1 cw, Hawai’i with 66 species, 3 forms, 1 ex. and 3 cw, Alaska 34 species and 1 cw, Louisiana 24 species and 2 forms, Oregon 20 species and 4 forms, Washington 20 species and 2 forms, Massachusetts 18 species and 1 form, and New Mexico 11 species.  All other States had less than 11 high counts.
