Rock Out with Macy Gray and Recycle Old Cosmetics Containers

To celebrate Earth Day, the cosmetic company Origins is throwing a party next Monday, the 19th, in the form of a free concert with Macy Gray as headliner. Artists Ryan Star and Jon McLaughlin will also perform. Though the show is free, you do need a ticket.

How do you score one? Bring an empty cosmetic package (the brand doesn’t matter) to any Origins store in New York City, Westchester or the Garden State Plaza Mall in Paramus, NJ. Even with a ticket, entry to the 7 p.m. show at Webster Hall, is first-come, first served. Anyone under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

As part of its “Return to Origins Recycling Program,” Origins will recycle the bottles, tubes, jars, caps and compacts you bring or send those that can’t be recycled to a company that turns trash into steam and electricity. For sanitary reasons, Origins will only accept primary packaging (i.e., the actual product protectors, such as a lipstick cover or glass and plastic bottles) and asks that the containers be totally empty, with any and all residue removed. The company won’t take:

- Secondary packaging
- Samples or trial-size containers
- Cosmetic applicators or tools
- Accessory items

The Earth Day concert has another eco-benefit. For every person who rocks out to Macy, Origins plans to plant a tree through Global ReLeaf, a program run by the nonprofit American Forests, which helps local communities plant and care for trees. The Webster’s Grand Ballroom, where the show will be held, holds up to 1,500 people—that’s a whole lot of trees for one day’s work.
