This summary covers 120 years of Christmas Bird Counts (CBCs) in the United States. My predecessor, Burt Monroe, summarized the all-time highs (ATHs) for CBCs in 1973 & 1986 and reported 726 species. Since then there has been a considerable amount of splitting of species and much new talent along with better gear entering the birding field. I summarized the results in 2000 and reported 823 species and 45 infraspecific forms, and in 2010 857 species, 66 infraspecific forms and 62 exotics. With the completion of the 120th season, we now have ATHs for 860 species, 93 infraspecific forms and 98 exotics. We also have nine species/forms which were only found during Count Week: Hawaiian Petrel, Galapagos/Hawaiian Petrel, Newell’s Shearwater, Key West Quail-Dove, Military Macaw, Dusky/Naumann’s Thrush, Dusky Thrush, Citrine Wagtail, and Eurasian Bullfinch. These records come from 47 states and 513 CBCs.
Records occur as number & skills of observers, coordinated efforts, access to land, and environmental & biological forces merge to produce the “Best” results. However, records are fleeting and generally will be broken. A testimony to this is that most species high count records are stacked closest to today and the fewest at the start of CBC history. Records occurring within 10-year increments of CBCs are as follows: 111th – 120th = 25%, 101st – 110th = 18%, 91st-100th = 14%, 81st-90th = 16%, 71st-80th = 13%, 61st-70th = 7%, and prior to the 60th = 6%. The real interesting ones are the 107 records that are older than 50 years. The count for each of these are bold-faced in the listings below.
These records are the history of people trying to survey the early winter avifauna, a quest to bring recognition to their area and themselves, a zest for counting birds because “that is what birders do”, and the actual conspicuousness and status of birds within the confines of CBCs. As you read the summaries of these records, try to visualize the conditions needed to produce the results. What was it like to find 89 Heath Hen at Edgartown, Massachusetts, during the 9th, four Ivory-billed Woodpeckers at Tallulah, Louisiana, during the 34th, 25 Dusky Seaside Sparrows at Titusville, Florida, during the 36th, eight Oahu Alauahio at Honolulu, Hawaii, during the 41st, two million Northern Pintails at Sacramento Refuge, California, during the 45th or over 100 million birds at Pine Prairie, Louisiana during the 87th? These situations may never occur again. They, along with all the other records were assuredly, unique and special. Spend some time contemplating how they were produced.
Competition to have the top tally of a species was quite extensive and many CBCs could not locate that one extra bird to have the ATHC record to itself. Twenty-six CBCs are tied with one Kentucky Warbler, 22 had one Slaty-backed Gull, 18 had one Sabine’s Gull, 13 had one Thick-billed Kingbird, and 10 had one Streak-backed Oriole. There were 26 other instances where at least five counts were tied to the highest tally. This led to the following results.
State-wise, Texas was Number 1 with ATHs for 159 species and 10 infraspecific forms, followed closely by California with 156 species and 26 forms. Florida had 119 & 10, Hawaii 107 & 6, Arizona 88 & 8, Alaska 46 & 3, Louisiana 37, Massachusetts 29 & 6, Washington 19 & 5, New Jersey 19 & 3, Oregon 19 & 1, North Carolina 18 & 2, Virginia 13, Colorado 12 & 6, and New Mexico 11 & 2. All other states had less than 10 ATHs.
The top 22 count localities have been responsible for at least nine ATHs each, as follows: 24 species at HI, Oahu: Honolulu; 20 species at TX, Anzalduas-Bentsen; 18 species at TX, Santa Ana N.W.R.; 17 species and two forms at FL, Coot Bay-Everglades N.P.; 17 species at TX, Freeport; 16 & 1 at FL, Fort Lauderdale; 15 & 1 at CA, Orange County (coastal); 15 species at FL, Kendall Area; 14 & 1 at AZ, Atascosa Highlands; 12 & 1 at AZ, Tucson Valley, and TX, Laguna Atascosa and Matagorda County-Mad Island Marsh; 12 species at HI, Midway Atoll; 11 & 4 at CA, San Diego; 11 species & 2 at AZ, Nogales and HI, Hawai’i: Volcano; 11 species at CA, Santa Barbara; 10 at AZ, Patagonia; 9 & 1 at CA, Point Reyes Peninsula and HI, Laysan Island; and 9 species at CA, Monterey Peninsula and FL, Cocoa.
The format for listing is as follows: species name followed by number of individuals; (within parenthesis, state name followed by CBC name and count(s) in which results were obtained; states are separated by semi-colon and multiple CBCs within a state by a comma). Species for records standing more than 50 years have the season bold-faced.
