Doug Meffert

As Vice President for the Gulf Coast and Mississippi Flyway, Doug leads the implementation of Audubon’s five key conservation strategies in that region and acts as its conservation lead for the Gulf of Mexico. Doug also served as the inaugural executive director of Audubon Louisiana, where he led programming that includes large-scale restoration, state coastal master-plan implementation, hydrodynamic research, and bottomland hardwood conservation. In addition, he oversaw the management of the Paul J. Rainey Sanctuary, stewarded the protection of Louisiana’s 23 Important Bird Areas, and developed international collaborations, including ongoing work in conserving critical mangrove habitats in Panama Bay, Panama. Prior to Audubon, Doug was director of project development at Tulane University’s Payson Center for International Development; executive director of RiverSphere, an initiative to develop a new campus oriented to water resources and renewable energy; and deputy director for the Tulane/Xavier Center for Bioenvironmental Research. Doug received a Loeb Fellowship for Advanced Environmental Design at Harvard’s Graduate School of Design as well as a fellowship from the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy. He currently lives in New Orleans.
