This sunflower-like, deciduous perennial grows 3 to 12 feet tall with hairy leaves and a stout, coarse stem that produces a resin. This plant is highly drought tolerant, growing in full sun and dry, well-drained soils. The yellow flower heads attract butterflies and bees, as well as birds that feed on the large seeds.
