This perennial grows 3 to 5 feet tall with a green or reddish-green central stem along which grow drooping, greenish flowers that give way to dry, brown fruit. This plant prefers full sun to light shade and wet soil. Deer often feed on this plant, and the seeds also provide a food source to birds.
