Also known as Esperanza, Yellow Trumpetbush or Trumpetflower, and Yellow Elder, this perennial, deciduous shrub usually reaches 3 to 6 feet in height. It grows lance-shaped, olive green leaves and clusters of showy, trumpet-shaped, yellow flowers that are especially attractive to butterflies and hummingbirds. This shrub grows in full sun and partial shade, and in dry, well-drained soils, including rocky, sandy, limestone, and loam soils.
A deciduous conifer that grows up to 80 feet tall in full sun and moist soils, Pond Cypress has a smaller, more columnar form and often fewer and smaller "knees" than the very closely related Bald Cypress (Taxodium distichum). This species also differs from its close relative in its preferred habitat of blackwater rivers, ponds, and swamps; it rarely grows along flowing streams. Its bright green foliage turns a vivid orange-brown in the fall.
