This evergreen, slightly thorny shrub also goes by the name of California Boxthorn, growing up to 4 feet high and 6 feet wide. Its leaves are bulbous and fleshy and remain green if continuously watered, while its white, bell-shaped flowers bloom in the spring. Birds and small mammals enjoy its shiny, bright red berries. Native to coastal environments, this plant grows in full fun and sandy soils, tolerating clay and poor soil conditions.
