Also commonly known as Turk’s Cap, Bleeding Hearts, and Mexican Apple, this shade-tolerant, perennial, and deciduous shrub is often as broad as it is high (3 to 4 feet), producing bright red, hibiscus-like flowers that never fully open. This plant prefers full sun but will tolerate light shade, and can grow in a variety of soils from sandy to limestone. It is highly drought and heat tolerant, and attracts butterflies and hummingbirds.
