Allegheny Monkey Flower, or Square-stemmed Monkey Flower, is a herbaceous perennial that typically grows 1 to 3 feet tall and blooms open-mouthed, lilac-purple flowers from June to September. It grows best in partial shade and moist to wet soils, and can also tolerate deer.
A clumped, grass-like perennial, Pennsylvania Sedge grows 6 to 12 inches tall. Clusters of brown seed capsules grow out near the top of the stem, and while the foliage is pale green in the spring and summer, it turns tan in the fall. This plant grows in full to sun to shade, and in dry to moist soils.
Bluejoint is perennial, clump-forming grass that grows 3 to 5 feet tall. The thin stems are each topped with a branched inflorescence that is purplish when first blooming, but turns tan later on. It grows in full sun to shade, and in moist and wet soils.
