Also known as Tall Bluestem and Turkeyfoot, this tall, perennial, warm season grass was the dominant grass of the tallgrass prairie. Flowering stems bring the total height of this grass to 4 to 8 feet. Highly drought tolerant and deer resistant, it grows in full sun and partial shade, and in moist, sandy, loam, and clay soils. This grass attracts butterflies and provides seeds, cover, and nesting site for a variety of birds.
Also called Black Elder, Mexican Elderberry, and Sauco, this bushy, wide spreading, perennial shrub grows 10 to 15 feet tall with deciduous compound leaves. It produces numerous white flowers during the summer and purple-black berries in late summer and fall that are eaten by many bird and mammal species. It grows in partial shade and in a variety of wet to dry soils, but is best in rich, moist, slightly acidic soils.
