Also known as Red Texas Star and Scarlet Gilia, this herbaceous biennial or short-lived perennial readily self-seeds, standing 2 to 5 feet tall and tolerating dry conditions. It is appropriately nicknamed for its erect spikes of red flowers that bloom during the summer and are highly attractive to hummingbirds. Standing-Cypress grows best in full sun to partial shade and in dry, sandy or rocky soils.
