Common names for this plant also include Bluebell Bellflower, Harebell, and Witches’ Thimble. It is an herbaceous perennial that grows 1 to 2 feet tall, and produces nodding, blue or violet flowers on delicate stalks in the summer. Bluebell-of-Scotland is adaptable, growing in full sun to shade, and in dry, sandy, and well-drained soils. Note that though the seedlings of this plant germinate quickly, it takes two years for them to flower.
Also known as Spicewood, this small, evergreen tree or large shrub typically grows 15 to 20 feet tall. Songbirds are drawn to its berries, which turn from green to orange to black, and to insects that feed on the plant's pale green flowers. This perennial is useful as a hedge plant, growing dense foliage in full to partial sun and moist to dry soils.
