This evergreen, perennial bush grows from 5 to 12 feet high. It produces white, light blue, or lavender flowers from February through April and also acts as a larval host to moth species. It is drought tolerant, growing in full sun and moist soils.
Also known as Cigar tree and Indian Bean, this is a perennial, ornamental tree, growing 30 to 60 feet tall with a 20 to 40-foot spread in partial shade and moist to wet soils. Its showy flowers, white with purple and yellow markings, appear in late spring and early summer, and are attractive to hummingbirds. Catalpas host the Catalpa sphinx caterpillar, an important food for cuckoos as well as both Swallow-tailed and Mississippi Kites.
Great Red Indian-Paintbrush or Meadow Paintbrush is an herbaceous perennial that grows 1 1/2 to 3 feet tall, with bright green leaves, and flower clusters that range from pale orange to vibrant scarlet and resemble a ragged paintbrush, thus earning it its name. This plant grows in full sun and wet to moist, well-drained soils. Great Red Indian-Paintbrush is often difficult to transplant because its roots grow until they become connected to the roots of other plants in order to partially obtain nutrients from them.
